The 4th of July was very different this year. It hardly felt like the 4th of July celebration that we are use to. This year our celebration was more of a sigh of relief, than a celebration. The Las Conchas fire here in Los Alamos hit too close to home. This year we did not have our normal 4th of July town festivities. Our community celebrated by getting to return home, thankful to have their homes to go to, and returning to a hometown that was unharmed. So this year was a little bit different and I will never forget it. We watched fireworks on TV from New York City, we did not fall asleep to the sound of bottle rockets and explosions, we did not have our normal parade and pool party, and our family BBQ was even smaller than usual.
This 4th of July I'm so thankful for all the men and women who protect and serve our country and allow us to be free. But this year I greatly honor the service men and women who protect us within and closer to home, police officers and firefighters who kept our community safe and out of harms way. The LAFD, LAPD, the National Guard, and many, many others made sure that the place we call home will continue to be called home. Home is where the heart is and there is no place like Los Alamos.
